Urwerk celebrates 20th anniversary with the launch of the UR-T8 Time flies when you are having fun! The same goes for Urwerk, who are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year and launching the UR-T8 at SIHH. The brand has come a long way in these two decades, creating watches such as the UR-103, UR-1001 and EMC Time-Hunter. The defining feature of many of these watches is, of course, the three conical discs indicating the hours and minutes, which are cleverly combined. Of course, this complication is also present on the UR-T8, because what would a 20th anniversary watch be without it?
Like many other Urwerk watches, the UR-T8 is a bold watch. This is a large watch, measuring 60.23mm x 48.35mm and 20.02mm thick. In fact, the watch is wider than it is tall and is made from grade 5 titanium, which greatly improves its comfort on the wrist. However, it's always an eye-catching piece, as the UR-T8 sports larger, rougher-looking trim, as we know from the UR-105 T-Rex. It gives the watch a Jurassic feel.
What's unique about the UR-T8 is that you can rotate the case, much like how Jaeger-LeCoultre flips its watches. As the watch spins, we see another side of Urwerk that we don't often see. The back has no functions as one might imagine, and this is where the watch shows off its philosophical side of being a timeless object. When you look closely at the upper left corner, you can see the turbine that is part of the movement, staring at you through the PVD-coated titanium guard.
When the watch is flipped back to the dial side by pressing the two pushers that hold the case in place, you can also see that Urwerk has skeletonized the tapered disc. This allows you to see part of the complex gear system needed to line up at the right time, at the right time. While anniversary watches like the UR-T8 are partly a reminder of the brand's past, they also carry a promise for the future, and we can't wait to see what the brand will achieve in the next 20 years. Achievement!
