Storm system to bring a return of wintry conditions to the F

It's been a very mild start to the month of March across the Front Range and Plains, but an approaching storm system will briefly flip the switch back to winter into this weekend.

The storm system will first bring the threat for heavy rain and flooding across the Southwest.

Gusty east to southeast winds will be among the first signs of the approaching storm system in places like Denver and Colorado Springs late Thursday and into the day on Friday. Aside from a few snow showers across the Colorado and Wyoming Rockies during the day on Thursday, much of the region will remain dry ahead of the approaching system.

The storm system is expected to spread rain and mountain snow across the entire Four Corners region by Friday as it continues its trek eastward.

With marginally cool air in place across the Four Corners region into the day on Friday, snow levels are expected to remain rather high across the Wasatch Range and in southwestern Colorado as precipitation moves in.

Through the day Friday, accumulating snow may be limited to locales above 8,000 feet across the mountains of the interior West.

Colorado Springs will definitely experience a bit of weather whiplash Thursday into Friday as temperatures take a massive swing. Temperatures in the lower 60s Thursday afternoon will likely be swapped out for highs in the middle 30s Friday.

Along with the much colder air on Friday, accumulating snow is expected to fall along the Front Range as well. In Denver, a mixture of rain and snow is expected to expand northward and reach the metro area by the afternoon hours.

This is not expected to be a blockbuster storm by any means along the Front Range, but most locales along the Interstate-25 corridor in Colorado will likely have a slushy coating to an inch or two before all is said and done Saturday.

As temperatures continue to lower into Friday evening, travel along interstates 25, 70,76 and 80 could become tricky in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and western Kansas, as snow accumulates.

Outside of the accumulating snow in the Rockies, North Platte, Nebraska, may end up with some of the highest snowfall totals as the storm moves through Friday night.

By the time the snow exits the area into the day on Saturday, a swath of 3-6 inches of fresh snowfall is possible across a large swath of western and central Nebraska.

In true Front Range fashion, temperatures will quickly rebound into the start of the weekend, melting any fresh snow that fell. Following the snow during the day on Friday, both Denver and Colorado Springs are expected to climb back into the 50s on Saturday.

As the storm system tracks eastward to start the weekend, a combination of drier air and higher temperatures will begin to diminish the snow threat across the Midwest. However, portions of interstates 70 and 80 in eastern Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri, will continue to be monitored.

Seasonably warm air is expected to persist into early next week across the Front Range, but another storm system that will bring accumulating snow and January-like cold to the interior Northwest is expected to usher in a round of well below-average temperatures into midweek next week.
